What Is BWLC?
Mission:
Black Women's Leadership Committee aims to unify and empower Black women through discussions built to enhance personal and professional development on campus.
Vision:
Due to the high volume of Black women led organizations on Michigan State University's campus, the Black Women's Leadership Committee offers an opportunity for all Black women to come together to discuss important topics in one setting. Black women can collaborate to inspire and engage with Black women and raise awareness about issues that concern our Black women community and discuss important practices to support our fellow Black women leaders as they strive to develop their leadership skills on campus.
Our Founder:
Jasmine Knight was born and raised on the east-side of Detroit, MI. She studied Interdisciplinary Studies – Community Governance & Advocacy with a Political Science Cognate during her years attending Michigan State University. While attending MSU, she played an active role on campus serving as an executive board member for various organizations and engaging with campus and the greater community as a Resident Assistant her Junior & Senior year. Jasmine believes in impacting the community around her which has also lead to her involvement in various community service projects through organizations, non-profits & even a Community Engagement Study Abroad Program in Mexico. She believes that through exploration and traveling you can truly learn about other cultures and customs along with learning about yourself. Through a Study Away Program in Puerto Rico, she was provided with the opportunity to enhance her Spanish fluency while learning about their culture and their political views. Jasmine completed her undergraduate career through participation in a Study Away Program in Washington, DC in Fall 2016. She was the Collegiate Programming Intern at Walker's Legacy, an eco-system of access designed to inspire, equip and engage a global network of emerging and established businesswomen of color. As an alumna of MSU, she currently works at MSU in the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives. In Fall 2017, she will be pursuing a Juris Doctor degree at Thurgood Marshall School of Law.
Jasmine also served as the 2016-2017 advisor for the Black Women’s Leadership Conference.
“There has been a major disconnect within our black community on campus for the past 4 years & wanted to find 1 thing to bring us together annually. We have so many registered student organizations that are not able to support and empower each other. My hope is to start with our Black Women but continue to expand this conference into something that allows our Black Women & Men to come together at least once a year to discuss various topics that impact our community. Thank you all for supporting my vision, believing in my idea, & coming out. I hope to see you all again next year for bigger & better things.”
